You can raise your quill 5.25 inches Sep 10, 2008
By Debra I had a problem with numbness in my hands that was not solved with padded gloves so I wanted to raise my handlebars to take pressure off my hands. This pyramid stem riser allowed me to keep the quill stem and the handlebar that had come with my bike, but to get the handlebars 5.25 inches higher. But I had to pay a bike shop to replace the 4 cables and housing because the cables did not have enough slack for the 5 extra inches. This worked well on my hybrid and made it more comfortable so I did the same thing on my mountain bike. Both bikes are from the mid 90's and have threaded quills. If you do not know what size you need, then loosen the quill and take it up and out and on it you will see numbers such as 22.2 engraved on it. Then buy the stem riser in the matching size such as 22.2 diameter. The higher handlebar height works well for me and I like that this product allowed me to get a higher height without buying a handlebar in a different shape.

Bicycle Stem Riser review Sep 25, 2007

Nice reasonable priced bicycle accessory to raise the handlebars of a mountain bike so you can sit upright. You need a moderate amount of skill to install it. Installation involves disconnecting brake and shift wires and replacing some of them with longer ones. Some bike shops will only sell complete cable and housing kits. Some will sell bulk housing and fittings that you can easily cut to fit your needs. You can also reuse rear brake cables for the front. If you are handy it is easy. If not find some one who is handy. Working well so far... Sep 28, 2010
By Rusty This stem extender was easy to install and does what it is intended. You won't gain 8.25 inches though, more like 5. It's over priced for what it is, but it works.

Pre-Knowledge How it works and sizing Apr 01, 2011
By mikenlp I too have the hands going numb and need/want to retain the existing handlebars as they have a neat guide for the front cantilever brake cable. As a newbie I needed answer to how best to solve the problem.
I fault Amazon for not furnishing more detail to many of their products, this being a case in point. The first review was good and I found this site to be excellent / informative. Need to get my order placed. Hope they have cabling here!

The Fall and Rise of a Stem Apr 20, 2012

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2VX7MVTXQ3Z9M This is a basic item that does exactly what you expect of it. Raises the height of your handlebars by increasing the height of your stem. I have an older Trek roadbike and the handlebars were way below the level of the seat. After installing the riser I was quite happy with how sturdy it was. It raised the height above the seat more than I really needed even at the lowest setting so beware of this. It made for a less aggressive but far more comfortable position. I had to install a new/longer front brake cable and housing but the shifter and rear brake cables were fine. As you can see the quill stem extender is finished in black so it did not match the brushed silver finish of the stock stem or headset, this may offend some roadies but it doesn't bother me a bit. I would guess that this modification can change the geometry and handling of a bike but I notice no change whatsoever.
It's good to note that this quill extender is designed for threaded steerer tubes or threaded stems. If you have a threadless steerer tube or threadless headset it's not for you. You can check out my short silent video.
