2Be gentle with it!  Apr 07, 2010 By Jesse Glaves
I should have known to avoid this item by reading the reviews, but the price seemed right, and it is an attractive fender. So, I installed the fender yesterday afternoon, and to my dismay, it was broken early this morning. I only got to ride the bike twice yesterday with the fender on it. During the usual motion of lifting my leg over the back of the bike to get on, I barely caught the fender on my jeans, and snap...it was laying on the floor. The arm that sits in-between the fender and the locking mechanism is attached to the locking mechanism by a thin piece of brittle plastic. It's a really bad design. On the bright side, I just called Topeak customer service and they are going to send me a new arm, no questions asked. I give this product two stars, because it looks nice, it works well when it is attached to the bike, and Topeak knows that this is a problem and seems willing to replace the broken parts without making it a huge ordeal.

4Quality fender with one minor issue  Mar 18, 2008 By A. Thomas
I got this and the M1 (front) fender to keep the skunk stripe off my back in wet weather. I only use this for commuting -- not for offroad rock/dirt protection -- so keep that in mind.

Overall, this fender is great quality, and is very versatile. The quick-release clamp actually fits over the seat tube on my '05 Dakar FS. I mention this only because it is designed to fit on the seat post, but the mechanism can be "unscrewed" to fit a lager diameter. The main (black) plastic is rigid, but the tip (gray part) is soft/flexible. This is great for when you -- or someone else -- accidentally bumps into it. The design allows you to set not only the height, but the slope as well.

The vertical adjustments lock down with Allen head screws, which is where my *minor* issue comes into play. Even fully screwed-in, the fender can be moved up and down -and- side to side fairly easily. Perhaps this is engineered to keep the rigid nylon pieces from snapping?

Although somewhat irrelevant to this item, I *did* encounter an issue with the M1. It broke at the mount on the first day I had it. The customer service at Topeak is awesome though, and I got a replacement part in 2 days!

5Works great!  Feb 20, 2010 By KC Cyclist
Very easy to install or remove. Does a good job of keeping the slop off of the rider.

2Nice look, poor performance and quality  Mar 10, 2011 By PurdueTony60
I purchased this fender to combat the winter rains of Indiana. I use my GIANT ATX to ride to classes on the campus of Purdue University. On the second day after installation, I was riding to class in the sleet/rain where the fender appeared to be performing its job well, stopping the slush from getting on my back. Unfortunately after about 5 minutes it built up with ice and slush where the fender was weighted down and the bracket between the fender and seat post clamp broke off, and the fender laying in the middle of the street. The attaching bracket also cracked where it attaches to the fender. I was very disappointed and would have thought this "high end" fender would have been better designed to handle this type of thing, especially if being used in muddy situations that are far worse (heavy) than the sleet. I will concede that it was very cold which probably contributed to the failure, but still... I contacted the company under warrenty and they didnt give me too much of a hassle in getting a replacement bracket (the did make me prove the purchase with the receipt which Amazon was very helpful with). It has been three weeks since the failure and i am still waiting for the replacement part, but I am assurred it is on its way from Topeak. (Im sure it will arrive after the rainy season is over. LOL) I would purchase this again, but with lower expectations, such as a rain barrier at best- No mud or ice! Overall great for stopping rain off the tires and it looks killer on my bike with the matching front fender! just be aware it is not very robust in design.

2Topeak DeFender M2 Rear fender  Apr 12, 2009 By Matthew Wilson
I can't believe that Topeak would produce such a piece of junk! I installed the M2 on my bike and accidentally hit the fender with my foot while mounting the bike and the plastic piece that connects the fender to the seat post snapped off! The fender itself isn't bad (that's the only reason why it got 2 stars)but Topeak needs to retool the connection point on this. I found it odd that a company that manufactures such wonderful tools would produce something so trashy!
